Nestlé Commitment

14/12/2009

Babies that receive the right nutrition in the first year of life are much more likely to benefit from good health throughout childhood and adulthood. Nestlé agrees with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other leading medical and health associations that breast milk is the best and most natural food for babies. Nestlé also supports the WHO/UNICEF’s Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding and Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative.

Like the WHO, Nestlé recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, followed by safe and appropriate complementary foods, preferably with continued breastfeeding until at least two years of age. This recommendation features on many of our infant nutrition products. We also distribute educational material in support of breastfeeding to healthcare professionals.

Nestlé supports breastfeeding and believes that breast milk is the best start a baby can have in life. All our infant formula producs carry out the following message, "Importance notice: Breast milk is best for babies. Before you decide to use infant formula consult your doctor or clinic for advice".

However, some mothers either cannot or choose not to breastfeed for the optimal time. They need a safe and nutritious alternative for their babies. For these women and their babies, Nestlé researchers have developed and continually improve a wide range of infant formula that meets the nutritional needs of babies during the first months of life.
