Governments' comments on Nestlé compliance

In 1998 the WHO Secretariat at the WHO Executive Board Meeting and at the World Health Assembly requested infant food companies to be more proactive in monitoring their own practices. As an attempt to further strengthen our monitoring procedures Nestlé decided to contact Governments in a structured way and ask them about their view on Nestlé's compliance with the WHO Code. Nestlé reported on the results of this initiative to the WHO Director General in a fully transparent way.

This initiative was taken since the WHO Code was adopted as a recommendation to all WHO Member States, to be implemented according to their social and legislative framework. Nestlé believes that the only legitimate interpretation/implementation of the WHO Code is the one done by governments and therefore the only legitimate monitoring is the one based on national legislations.
