1. Note on breastfeeding rates

Nestlé Milkpak recently commissioned the research company SB&B to conduct a survey into infant nutrition in Pakistan. The objective was to obtain reliable statistical data on the knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of Pakistani urban mothers regarding infant nutrition. The survey was conducted in the ten most populous cities in Pakistan. The total number of women interviewed was1839.

The results have shown that 49% of women exclusively breast-feed their babies between the ages of 0 and 12 months. In contrast only 3.3% of women exclusively use infant formula to feed their children. However 11% of mothers were found to exclusively feed with Gawala milk, (unpasteurised, and often contaminated, cow's milk).

The lowest income groups have the highest rates of exclusive breastfeeding, just over 50% compared with below 40% for higher income groups. Less than 10% of the lowest income groups use infant formula at all.
