The WHO International Code and Mexican Regulations

Nestlé Mexico, along with other manufacturers of infant formula, sits as a guest on the Mexican National Committee for Breastfeeding, which amongst other functions, monitors the marketing practices of companies.

As part of their involvement in this Committee, companies must adhere to the Mexican Norms for Care of Mothers during Pregnancy, Childbirth and Infant Care and of New-borns in addition to various other Mexican laws and regulations which are designed to promote breastfeeding, protect infant health and support mothers with young children. The National Council of Manufacturers and Distributors of Infant Formulas, of which Nestlé is a member, agreed to comply with these norms and to respect the International Code, signing an agreement before the Minister of Health.

In April 1999, the Ministry of Health certified that Nestlé complies with the Mexican Government's implementation of the WHO International Code.

"Special recognition must be given to Nestlé Mexico for their efforts made to date to honour this commitment [compliance with the Mexican government's implementation of the WHO Code], and thanks for their co-operation with the General Administration of Reproductive Health in propagating and promoting health programmes and activities."
